What is a Chemical Peel?

Medical-grade chemical peels are among the most extensively studied and effective skin rejuvenation treatments available in aesthetic medicine. The principle is simple: a carefully selected and precisely measured acidic solution is applied to the skin to promote controlled exfoliation of the damaged surface layers and stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the deeper layers. Chemical Peel Treatment Step by Step

Evaluation Consultation. It all starts with a comprehensive medical evaluation of your skin. The doctor analyzes your skin type, medical history, and aesthetic goals to determine the most appropriate type of peel, the number of sessions needed, and the interval between them. Depending on the condition of your skin, a preparation regimen with at-home products may be recommended to maximize results.
Choosing a Protocol. The doctor will determine the peel or combination of peels best suited to your needs—the type of acid, the concentration, and the number of passes. No two treatment plans are alike; each treatment is designed specifically for you.
Treatment. The skin is cleansed and disinfected. The peel is applied and left on for a specified period of time. A neutralizing agent is typically used to control the depth of action. During the treatment, you may feel a slight sensation of warmth or tingling, which is completely normal and temporary. The procedure takes between 30 and 45 minutes. At the end, a moisturizer and SPF 50+ sunscreen are applied.
Result. Over the next 2 to 5 days, it is normal for the skin to peel slightly—a sign that cell renewal is underway. After this period, the skin appears smoother, more even, and more radiant, with the best results visible after 2 weeks. No downtime is required: you can resume your normal activities the same day.

These are complementary treatments, not competing ones. Chemical peels refer to a group of peels containing acidic formulations (glycolic, salicylic, pyruvic, mandelic, among others), typically ranging from superficial to medium depth, recommended for general skin renewal, mild discoloration, enlarged pores, and improved skin tone. The TCA (trichloroacetic acid) peel is a medium- to deep-depth peel, recommended for more stubborn dark spots, acne scars, and more pronounced rejuvenation. The choice between one or the other—or a combination of both—always depends on an individual medical evaluation.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on the clinical indication and treatment goals. For general skin rejuvenation and brightening, we typically recommend 3 to 6 sessions spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart. For more intensive treatments targeting dark spots or scars, the treatment plan is determined on an individual basis during the initial consultation.

Is a chemical peel painful?

No. During the procedure, you may feel a slight sensation of warmth or tingling, which is temporary and completely normal. The treatment does not require anesthesia and does not cause significant pain. The intensity of the sensation depends on the type of acid and the concentration used, which are tailored to your specific case.

When can I wear make-up after treatment?

You can apply light mineral makeup immediately after the treatment, or regular makeup as soon as the initial redness subsides, usually within the first few hours. During the peeling period (days 2 through 5), we recommend avoiding makeup on areas that are peeling, so as not to interfere with the skin’s renewal process.

What aftercare is required following a chemical peel?

For the 7 days following treatment: avoid direct sun exposure and use SPF 50+ sunscreen whenever you go outside; avoid hot water, saunas, and steam baths; do not use exfoliants or cosmetics containing acids, retinoids, or retinols; do not touch or force the peeling—dead skin will shed naturally. A cold compress can help soothe the skin in the first few hours. The same restrictions apply during the 7 days prior to treatment.

Is a chemical peel safe for darker or sensitive skin?

Yes, as long as it is performed using a protocol appropriate for the patient’s skin type and condition. Darker skin (skin types IV–VI) requires specific formulations to minimize the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is why a prior medical evaluation is essential.
