Thread Lift in Lisbon

What Are Thread Lifts?

A thread lift is a minimally invasive facial rejuvenation treatment that lifts and tightens sagging skin without surgery. At Michelle Bond Clinic in Lisbon, we use PDO (Polydioxanone) threads — a biocompatible, fully absorbable material that has been used safely in medicine for over 30 years.

The treatment works on two levels:

  • Immediate mechanical lift: threads are inserted beneath the skin and create a gentle traction that repositions the tissues, giving a visibly lifted effect from the moment of treatment.
  • Progressive collagen stimulation: over the following weeks, the threads trigger your skin’s natural collagen production (neo-collagenesis), making the skin progressively firmer, more elastic and better hydrated.

The threads dissolve naturally within 6 to 8 months, but the lifting effect lasts an average of 12 to 18 months. Each session takes approximately 30 minutes.

The Treatment Step by Step

Our protocol is thorough, precise and fully personalised:

  1. Initial consultation. We assess your face, discuss your goals and define the most suitable treatment plan.
  2. Preparation. The skin is cleansed and disinfected. An anaesthetic cream is applied to the treatment area for comfort.
  3. Thread insertion. Under local anaesthesia, the doctor inserts the PDO threads beneath the skin to a depth of 3 to 5 millimetres, using needles of varying lengths and thicknesses tailored to each area. No incisions are required.
  4. Repositioning. The doctor gently compresses the tissue to reshape the contour and achieve the desired lifting effect. The thread ends are trimmed flush with the skin.
  5. Post-treatment. Results are visible immediately. The most noticeable improvement emerges after two weeks, as the collagen stimulation takes effect. The peak result is typically reached around four weeks post-treatment.

Important note: thread lifts can be performed in combination with hyaluronic acid filler and / or anti-wrinkle injections in the same session. This combination is often the approach that delivers the most complete and natural-looking results.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do thread lift results last?

On average, results last between 12 and 18 months. Individual lifestyle, daily skincare routine and the number of threads applied all influence how long the effects are maintained.

The PDO threads themselves dissolve naturally within 6 to 8 months, but the firmness and contouring effect continues beyond that point, sustained by the collagen stimulation they trigger.

What aftercare is required?

Some redness and sensitivity around the insertion points is normal in the first 24 to 48 hours.

We recommend:

– Avoid touching the treated area for 4 hours after treatment

– Avoid sleeping on the treated side for 3 nights

– If bruising occurs, apply arnica gel several times daily (available at any pharmacy)

– Avoid facial treatments for 4 weeks (after this period, all treatments except laser are permitted)

– Avoid strenuous exercise that causes facial flushing for 2 weeks

– Use SPF and limit sun exposure during the recovery period

Most patients return to normal activities the day after treatment.

Are there any contraindications?

Thread lifts are not recommended for: patients with allergies or hypersensitivity to thread materials; pregnancy or breastfeeding; acute infectious diseases; active skin inflammation in the treatment area; oncological conditions; a tendency to keloid scarring; blood clotting disorders or immune system diseases.

A medical assessment is always required before treatment to confirm each patient’s suitability.

Is a thread lift painful?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so discomfort is minimal. During insertion you may feel some pressure, but not acute pain.

Afterwards, mild sensitivity or a slight tension in the treated area is normal for 2 to 5 days as the skin adjusts.

What is the difference between PDO and PLLA threads?

PDO threads (Polydioxanone) are the most widely used. They dissolve within 6 to 8 months and provide an immediate lifting effect along with progressive collagen stimulation.

PLLA threads (Poly-L-Lactic Acid) last longer — up to 18 to 24 months — and are particularly suited to moderate to significant skin laxity, offering more prolonged collagen stimulation.

The choice of thread type is made by your doctor based on your individual assessment.

Can thread lifts be combined with hyaluronic acid filler or anti-wrinkle injections?

Yes — and this combination is often what we recommend. The three treatments work synergistically:

– Thread lift: restores facial contour and lifts sagging tissue

– Hyaluronic acid filler: restores lost volume

– Anti-wrinkle injection: softens expression lines

All three treatments can be performed in the same session, subject to prior medical assessment.

From what age are thread lifts recommended?

Thread lifts are typically recommended from the age of 35 to 40 onwards, when collagen loss and tissue descent become more visible.

In younger patients, they may be indicated for specific localised concerns or asymmetries, always subject to medical evaluation.

How long does a thread lift session take?

A session takes approximately 60 minutes, including skin preparation and thread application. Most patients return to normal activities the following day, with no hospital stay required.
