I always had many difficulties sleeping, I tried many therapies, but only with Dr. Michelle's help I discovered what a good night's sleep is. I am today a different person and with much more energy.

Fluid retention

Many women suffer from fluid retention, especially on hotter days. This happens when excess fluid builds up in the body. It is also known as edema and occurs in the circulatory system or within tissues and cavities. It can cause swelling in the hands, feet, ankles, and legs.

Fluid retention is an increasingly common problem. Swollen legs at the end of the day, with pressure marks from socks or shoes, are an example of edema or fluid retention. The problem is caused by abnormal accumulation of fluid within the body's tissues, and is most common in women during menstruation or pregnancy.

Symptoms and prevention

Symptoms associated with fluid retention:

  • Swelling and stretching of the skin;
  • When the swollen area is palpated, you can see a depression forming for a few seconds;
  • Cellulite often appears on the back of the thighs;
  • The skin gets marks from clothes, socks, underwear, and pants;
  • In addition to the lower limbs, abdomen, face, hands and fingers become swollen;
  • You notice an increase in weight due to this retained liquid.

If fluid retention is not the result of a health problem, some measures can prevent it:

  • Staying hydrated on a daily basis makes it easier for the kidneys to function properly;
  • Do physical activity regularly;
  • Avoid staying in the same position for too long, whether standing, sitting, with legs crossed;
  • Elevate your legs at the end of the day;
  • Avoid wearing tight clothing;
  • Decrease consumption of foods high in sodium;
  • Include in the diet foods rich in magnesium (pumpkin seeds), vitamin B6 (nuts), potassium (raisins, wheat germ).

Frequently Asked Questions

Causes of fluid retention

Just over two-thirds of the body is made up of water, and there are sophisticated mechanisms for maintaining the balance of fluids in the body. However, all body fluids, including blood, are compartmentalized according to their function.

The existence of imbalances in these mechanisms, such as variations in regional blood pressure, the amount of protein in the blood, the amount of salts available in the body, among other factors, can favor fluid retention.

Other possible causes are:

  • Excess sodium in the diet;
  • Sedentarism;
  • Overweight and obesity;
  • Smoking;
  • Improper feeding;
  • Alcoholic beverages;
  • Periods of great hormonal variation;
  • Kidney, heart, or liver problems;
  • Thyroid diseases;
  • Some medications;
  • Inflammatory reactions.

Most of the time, however, the small swellings have a local cause, such as insufficient regional circulation.
