Tensioning Wires

What are tensioning wires?

Tensor threads is an anti-aging treatment that does not require general anesthesia or invasive surgery, and is also known as a non-surgical facelift. The face gets a natural look, and the results are discrete but can last up to 18 months. The treatment session requires only 30 minutes to perform.

PDO (Polydioxanone) yarn is a strong filament fiber, consisting of a few strands of twisted solid fiber, which dissolves into the body tissue after a certain time (usually 6 to 8 months)

PDO material has been used for over 30 years in plastic surgery, gastroenterology, urology, gynecology, and ophthalmology for cutaneous and subcutaneous stitches. These threads have high tensile strength, excellent flexibility and smooth tissue passage. They are made of material that meets all the requirements established by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) for surgical sutures.

PDO ultimately breaks down into water and carbon dioxide, which are absorbed naturally by the skin. It causes a very mild reaction during absorption, minimal inflammatory reaction with subsequent formation of new collagen production around the strand (neo-collagenesis).

In our clinic we use the highest quality PDO threads. They are FDA approved, moldable, and 100% absorbable.

The treatment step by step

  1. Evaluation. Schedule your evaluation appointment.
  2. First consultation - clinical. During the consultation, you will have the opportunity to discuss the treatment and the results you want to achieve with our medical specialist.
  3. Treatment. It begins with cleansing and disinfection of the skin. Then an anesthetic cream will be applied to the treatment area for comfort. After a small local anesthesia, the doctor inserts the PDO threads under the skin at a depth of about three to five millimeters, using needles of different lengths and thicknesses, adapted to each treatment area, creating an immediate lifting effect. No cutting is required.
    Once the threads are in place, the medical specialist performs a light compression on the tissue to manually remodel it and thus obtain the desired lifting effect. The uninserted ends of the threads are cut off. The quantity of threads used varies according to each patient's needs.
  4. Post-treatment / results. You will see the result of the treatment immediately, however it can be observed more visibly after 2 weeks, which is the time it takes for the collagen stimulation to show its effects. In 4 weeks the treatment reaches its apex, in which the skin becomes firmer, more elastic and hydrated.
    If the patient does not want to have face lift surgery, the thread lift can be a very effective alternative. The threads dissolve in a few months, but the effect lasts longer than normal dermal fillers.

Note: Tensor threads can be performed as a single treatment or combined with another procedure (filler, anti-wrinkle injection).

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do the results last?

The duration of the results is, on average, about 12 - 18 months. However, the lifestyle of the person also has an impact on the durability of the procedure, as does the care they take of their skin on a daily basis.

Is any care needed after the procedure?

Yes, care is needed, namely:

  • Do not touch the treated area for 4 hours;
  • Avoid sleeping in the treated area for 3 nights;
  • If a bruise appears, apply arnica gel several times a day (can be purchased at any pharmacy);
  • Do not do any facial treatments for 4 weeks. After that period, you may have other facial treatments, except laser treatments;
  • Avoid strenuous exercises and those that cause the face to heat up for 2 weeks.
What is the post-procedure care?

After treatment, the skin may become inflamed and sensitive around the injection site, improving in 24-48 hours. Rarely, allergic reactions to the tensor threads occur, such as redness and itching, which can be treated with the use of topical anti-inflammatory drugs or oral tablets, as directed by your doctor.

It is a procedure that does not require much time for recovery. However, it is recommended to use sunscreen and avoid excessive exposure to the sun, as well as to avoid intense physical activities during the recovery period (day of the procedure). The day after the procedure, normal activities can be resumed, and no further rest is required. However, avoid strenuous exercises and those that cause the face to heat up.

What are the contraindications?

The procedure is contraindicated for patients with allergy and hypersensitivity to the threads, pregnant and lactating women, people with acute infectious diseases, skin inflammation, cancers, tendency to keloids, tendency to bleed, and some blood diseases (blood clotting) and immune system diseases.

What are the complementary treatments?

There are other treatments that can be complementary to this one, among them we distinguish the following:

Anti-wrinkle creams

Anti-wrinkle creams fight aging and moisturize the skin. They are divided into cosmetics, dermocosmetics, and nutricosmetics:

  • Cosmetics: superficial action, they act to moisturize and protect the skin against wind, heat, and pollution;
  • Dermocosmetics: these act in a deeper way, and have more powerful actives and substances to fight blemishes, scars, and flabbiness;
  • Nutricosmetics: such as collagen and antioxidants, help improve the skin from the inside out.

No Needle Dermal Filler

Filling with hyaluronic acid is a technique that consists in injecting hyaluronic acid to fill wrinkles, furrows, depressions. It can also be used for reshaping such as zygomatic/malar volume augmentation. Learn more on the page Filling with hyaluronic acid.

Anti-wrinkle injection

The effect of this application promotes the smoothing of wrinkles and expression lines on the face, mainly in the eye region (such as crow's feet), in the forehead region, or in the space between the eyebrows (glabella).

Can I place the tensor threads and do the hyaluronic acid filler and/or anti-wrinkle injection and on the same day?

Yes, it is possible to do these treatments on the same day. It is, in fact, through the combination of these three types of facial treatments that the best results are obtained.
