Myofascial Release is a physical and manual therapy used for the effective treatment and recovery of soft tissue and fascial tensions and restrictions. The word myofascia is derived from the Greek word "myo", meaning muscle, and "fascia", meaning band.
The fascia surrounds, fills, and protects all tissues, tendons, muscles, bones, ligaments, and organs in the body. It is the connective tissue that holds the body together. The fascial system is a softening and supporting mechanism that allows the body to move safely without restriction or pain.
In an ideal condition, the fascial system is relaxed and rippled. Whereas in a system that is causing pain and restrictions, the fascia has lost its flexibility and is dehydrated, stiff, and stuck.
Myofascial release is considered the "missing link" in massage and bodywork and is effective in treating pain and trauma. It is a specialized treatment that releases restrictions in the fascial network, allowing rigid and stuck areas to become soft and mobile. The effect is one of relief throughout the body.
