Diet to Gain Weight

For whom it is intended

This diet is for those who need to achieve a healthy weight. This is one of the most important goals for those who are underweight. However, it is not the only reason that makes people want to gain weight, some may want to gain muscle mass to play sports or they may be recovering from some illness.

The term "underweight" is typically used to describe an individual who is not within a healthy weight range and has less body fat than is necessary for maximum well-being.

Although there are some people who have a naturally thin body type, those who are underweight as a result of poor nutrition or for a health issue have a significant risk of developing certain health problems.

Is being "underweight" a good thing?

Being underweight can cause physical problems but for some individuals it can also affect their psychological state. Our self-image plays an important role in our self-confidence and self-esteem, and a person who is not satisfied with his or her weight may end up depressed.

There are a few factors that need to be taken into consideration when it comes to determining why someone is underweight, including the following:

  1. Elderly (mobility, swallowing difficulties, motivation to cook, etc.)
  2. Emotional problems (stress, anxiety, depression, etc.)
  3. Loss of taste
  4. Poor absorption
  5. Malnutrition
  6. Excessive physical activity
  7. The diseases such as: overactive thyroid, inflammatory bowel disease, and celiac disease.

What is body fat, body mass index, and body weight?

Body fat is estimated using a measure known as Body Mass Index (BMI), which classifies a person as underweight if their BMI is below 18.5.

A person's body weight is determined by the amount of calories consumed in relation to the amount of energy used by the body. If we consume the same amount of calories as the body expends, it means that energy use will be balanced and our weight will remain the same. In contrast, if we consume too many calories the body will use any extra and store them as fat (resulting in weight gain).

If we consume too little, the body will have to dip into its own reserves in order to get the energy it needs (resulting in weight loss).

What does the diet for gaining weight consist of?

There are two points to keep in mind when dieting to gain weight:

  • Treatment

First, it is necessary to discover and treat the cause of what is causing the weight to be underweight. For example, if a person has irritable bowel syndrome, the cause and symptoms will be treated first because once the problem is resolved, the person will begin to gain weight.

  • Nutrition

It is important for a person to gain weight gradually and with nutritious foods. There are several ways to do this, such as including foods rich in "good" fats in the diet, eating more often, and including high-calorie shakes in the diet plan.

The food plan is adapted to the client's needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a first nutrition consultation consist of?

The goal of the first consultation is to understand your current health condition in as much detail as possible. Your health history will be discussed and, if necessary, a physical evaluation will be performed.

In some cases, additional tests may be requested between the first and second visit. The initial treatment and development of the treatment plan are discussed in this session. The first consultation lasts about an hour.

Is the nutrition consultation tailored to my needs?

Nutritional treatment is deeply focused on individualized care. No two prescriptions are the same, because each person is unique and their current state of health is the sum total of their experiences.

The outcome of the treatment varies depending on the individual and the problem being treated. Thus, some people may get quick results, while others may take several months or longer.

How does the follow-up work?

At the beginning of the treatment face-to-face appointments are usually every 4 weeks. One should not space it out much more than that.

Additionally, I offer support for questions that may arise after the consultations (1 email or 1 phone call). I like to follow my patients closely, especially at the beginning of the treatment. Because this way the results are better.
