Learn about the different types of acne:
- Blackheads: are black or yellow, but small acne spots are found on the skin. The black color is the result of pigmentation in the inner life of the hair follicle.
- White dots or milium: these are bubbles that don’t drain completely when picked or squeezed. They are very firm, although they look like black dots.
- Pustules: have a white tip, but are similar to papules. They contain pus.
- Nodules: these are hard and located below the surface of the skin. They can be very painful.
- Cysts: these are large and filled with pus. They appear like boils and can form scars when squeezed. Cysts are a severe form of acne.
The main complication of popping pimples is that they damage the surrounding skin tissues, forming scars. So, if not treated properly, acne can cause scars, which can remain visible forever. See more in the Frequently Asked Questions.
